About Elizabeth Kirkpatrick
ELIZABETH KIRKPATRICK
The parentage of Elizabeth Kirkpatrick, who died before 1436, has not been definitely ascertained, but as it was through her that her husband, William Carlyle, obtained the lands of Kirkpatrick, it is probable she was a daughter of Sir Duncan of Kirkpatrick, lord of that Ilk, who on 10 August 1398 had, on his own resignation, a charter to himself and Isabel his wife of the barony of Torthorwald, from King Robert III. The barony was to be held to them and the heirs of their bodies, whom failing, to the nearest and lawful heirs of Duncan whomsoever, a destination which suggests they had no sons. Sir Duncan died before 4 June 1425, after which date William Carlyle is styled of Torthorwald. Elizabeth Kirkpatrick had, as already stated, a sister Jonet, who married Thomas Grahame of Auchincass, and was also dead in 1436. Jonet had a third of Kirkpatrick, and the third co-heiress thus indicated was Isobella, daughter of Sir Duncan Kirkpatrick, married about 14 November 1412 to Gilbert Grierson, younger of Lag. Research Notes and Comments
Jim Weber writes: "Burke's Peerage has an Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Thomas Kirkpatrick of Closeburne, but she was born much earlier and married a Sir John Carlyle, probably the one who died 1333 at the Battle of Halidon Hill. This Elizabeth may be a mistake. The only Thomas Kirkpatrick of Closeburne who has a birth date appropriate to be Elizabeth's father supposedly died without issue, but it may be that he just died without male issue."
Peter Barnes-Graham writes: "The folowing connection is made very speculatively ! TSP (Carlyle) reports that Torthorwald came into that family through a marriage to an Elizabeth Kirkpatrick, probably the daughter of a Sir Duncan Kirkpatrick who was described as 'of that ilk'. TCP (Carlyle) identifies Elizabeth's parentage as "probably da. of Sir Duncan Kirkpatrick, by Isabel his wife". TSP (Carlyle) identifies the sisters of that Elizabeth and their spouses. BP1934 (Grierson) identifies one of those sisters as daughter of Duncan de Kirkpatrick of Rocall. We suspect that the description 'of that ilk' is misleading and that the 3 sisters are descended from this Duncan and Isabel - although the dates suggest that there was probably an intervening generation as follows:
"(A) Sir Duncan Kirkpatrick 'of that ilk' of Rocall
m. Isabel
(i) Elizabeth Kirkpatrick (d before 1436)
m. William Carlyle of Torthorwald (d before 10.11.1463)
(ii) Janet Kirkpatrick
m. Thomas Grahame of Auchincase
(iii) Isabella Kirkpatrick
m. (c14.11.1412) Gilbert Grierson of Lag (dspms 1457)"
