Louis Adrian Maritz was the Uncle of Olive and Lucretia born Maritz. He enlisted in the South African Local Forces in the War of 1914-1918. He was in Parkinson's Horse He was mentioned in a dispatch from Louis Botha on 5th April 1918 for gallant and distinguished services in the field, the Certificate from the War Office in Whitehall London was signed by Winston Churchill, Secretary of the State for War. He was also awarded the Medaille Militaire for acts of bravery. On is discharge papers he is described as Private L. A Maritz of the SA Veteran Regiment aged 56. Being 5' 10" in height, of fair complexion with grey eyes and grey hair. He was discharged at Aus in South West Africa. He joined up on the 4th of May 1915.
