The Batlapin tribe, part of the wider Bechuana peoples and language group, were settled in the north-west Cape Colony, western Transvaal and Orange Free State, as well as southern Botswana. Taungs, Kuruman and Mafikeng (formerly Mafeking) are urban centres.
