About Louis C. Young, Jr

Family: His parents apparently divorced when he was young, and he was raised with his maternal grandparents.

DEATH: I, Susan M. Skiver Grantham, have newspaper articles regarding Louis' death. A letter to the editor from Jack White of Prescott, Arizona in the Evening Independent is dated June 22, 1993. I have an article dated Saturday and Sunday, June 19-20, 1993, that reports he died Friday evening. He died in Massillon Community Hospital (in the emergency room). He had been in ill health.

Religion: Louis was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Massillon, Ohio.

Residence: 838 Sheffield Ave. N.E., Massillon, Ohio was his residence.

Occupation: He was superintendent of Massillon Public Schools from 1974-1980. Previously he had been a teacher and a coach (beginning in 1946 at Edmund A. Jones Junior High. After coaching for six years, he was appointed supervisor of physical education in the elementary and junior high schools. In 1953 he was named faculty manager of athletics at Washington High School (Massillon). In 1955 he was named business manager and was switched to assistant superintendent of business affairs in 1958.

Achievements: Many were his achievements, including being Massillon City School superintendent from 1974 to March 1980--see newspaper article, Massillon Independent, Saturday and Sunday, June 19-20, 1993.

Education: Louis went to (probably graduated from) Canton McKinley High School. He also went to Ohio State University. His educational career spanned 34 years in Massillon. His long association with Tiger football began in 1941 when he started scouting for the team.

Married: He was married to Erma Krisher at St Paul's Lutheran Church in Massillon, OH. (His funeral service was also conducted there.)

Health: He had a heart condition, which caused him to resign from his superintendent post.

Activities: He was an avid Tigers' fan. At Canton McKinley he was a standout center for the Bulldogs in 1934 when they defeated the Tigers 21-6. He continued his football career at Ohio State University as a tackle and remained active in its alumni associations. His activities in the community were numerous. He was president of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Luncheon Club; served on the board of directors of the United Way and its budget committee; president of the Massillon Public Library Board; member of the board of directors of the Social Planning Council; president of the Massillon Rotary Club; a corporate board member of the Massillon Automobile Club; a lifetime member of the Massillon Tiger Football Booster Club; member of the Touchdown Club; emeritus membership in the Phi Delta Kappa; active with the Massillon Area Community Civic Trust; and he helped form the committee with directs the Washington High Distinguished Citizens program.
