About Louisa Clayton

Mrs. Louisa Clayton passed away at her home in Avon, Illinois, Tuesday evening, March 29, 1932, after several weeks sickness of heart trouble, which followed an attack of flu, at the age of 83 years, 7 months and 27 days.

Louisa Hodson was born August 2, 1848, at Frankfort, Ky., and came to Illinois when about twelve years old. She was married to Thomas Clayton in 1871, and to this union was born four daughters, Mrs. Alice Carlson of Casey, Iowa; Mrs. Carrie Munson of Monmouth; Mrs. Hattie Robison of Galesburg; and Mrs. Mary Hovell of this city, who survive her.

In 1879 her husband died while they were living near Roseville. In 1881 she was married to Stanford Clayton and five children were born to them, Mrs. Pearl Johnson and Mrs. Leila Butler of Bushnell, Mrs. Amanda Baker, Earl and Elmer of Avon. She also leaves to mourn her death 32 grandchildren and great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family moved to Vinton, Iowa, and it was here that her husband died April 13, 1904. They then returned to Illinois and have since resided in Avon.

She was a member of Avon M. E. church, also a charter member of the Woman's Auxiliary of American Legion.

About the first of the year she suffered an attack of flu and has been in failing health until the day of her death.

Grandma Clayton was a home-loving mother, always taking great interest in her children and their families. She raised four step-children besides her own.

Fading away like the stars of the morning,
Losing their light in the florious sun.
Thus would we pass from the earth and its toiling,
Only remembered by what we have done.

Funeral services were held from the Methodist church, Thursday, March 31, at 2:00 o'clock p.m., conducted by Rev. L. J. Sailor of Bushnell, assisted by the local pastor, Rev. George M. Hoyle. The songs, "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Will the Circle Ever Be Broken?" were rendered by Mrs. Lucille Reihm and Mrs. Ella Mings, accompanied upon the piano by Mrs. Christine Telford.

Interment was made in the Avon cemetery. The pallbearers, all members of Edward Chatterton Post of the American Legion, were: G. K. Young, Walter Hallbick, G. A. Merrill, Irvin Horn, R. B. Orwig and Leo Stephenson.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Nov 20 2019, 17:12:25 UTC
