Lowell was a decorated soldier who was drafted into the Army during World War II, in September 1941 and served until November 1945, in Company C, 51st Engineers Battalion. His job was to build bridges for the Army in Germany. He was awarded 2 "Bronze Stars" for the Rhineland Central Europe Campaign, as well as several other ribbons and awards for his service.
