About Mamie Elizabeth Rowan
GEDCOM Note
As per Anna Shaw:
Mamie was a hard working woman who was quiet by nature. She was never very big, and wore her hair in a bun, as I remember her. She had no luxuries in her life, living in a house with no running water or central heat. She cooked on a wood stove for many years, and ironing was done with an iron heated on the stove. Laundry was done on a washboard. She had simple tastes, but always had some candy hidden around the house, which she would share with her grandchildren. She helped with the milking of cows, grew a garden and canned vegetables in the summer. She also kept hives of bees for honey.
Howard's family lived just 1 mile from Grandma and Grandad Rowan when growing up on a neighboring farm. As children lots of time was spent with them. Playing in their cellar was a favorite pastime, since they did not have one. When they stayed overnight, sleeping in a big featherbed, she would cook rice for hot breakfast cereal, which was rarely had at home, so it was a big treat. She had Hollyhock flowers in the yard, which were her only flowers. They also had a big mulberry tree, from which the grandchildren liked to eat the mulberries.
She died when I was 13 years old, from a stroke. I happened to be with her when she died, and was heartbroken. An important person who loved me, and I her, had gone from my life.
