Kees Evertsen was de jongste zoon en tiende kind van commandeur Johan Evertsen (de zoon van de watergeus Evert Heindricxzen, die wij nu kennen onder de naam Jan de Kapitein) en Maayken Jans. Cornelis Evertsen the Elder ( Flushing 4 August 1610 - 11 June 1666 ) was a Dutch admiral from the seventeenth century . Cornelis (aka Kees) Evertsen was the youngest son and tenth child of Commander Evertsen (the son of the Watergeus Evert Heindricxzen which we now know as Johan de Kapitein (John the Captain) and Maayken Jans (Maayken daughter of Jan (John). The heroic death of his father in 1617 were all his sons by the Admiralty of Zeeland appointed to the rank of lieutenant, even the young Keesje. In 1622 he went on the ship of his brother John. In 1626 he went into actual naval service at the Admiralty. In 1628 he had the position of captain (highest non-commissioned officer) under his brother. In 1635 he left out of dissatisfaction with the mismanagement by Lieutenant-Admiral Philips van Dorp the Navy as a privateer (then an honorable profession) to work, but on 25 August 1636 he accepted again, through the intercession of his brother, an appointment as captain of a frigate . He fought under Joost van Stairs Banckert and lost twice in those years his ship through a storm. In the Battle of the Downs in 1639 he boarded a galleon . In 1640 he married Johanna Gorum (1615-1657). In the years to 1646 he held the typical standard tasks of the Navy at that time: the convoy to ships and blocking the Dunkirk pirates .
