About Lt. Anthony Morse

PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS CONFLICTING INFO BELOW REGARDING THE MOTHERS OF ANTHONY'S CHILDREN. Some sources show Elizabeth as being the mother of all of his children, while other sources split the children between Elizabeth and Mary.

Elizabeth could not have be the mother of all his children if the dates are correct - she died in 1667, perhaps in childbirth while having daughter Elizabeth whose birth and death dates are both 1667 as well.

Anthony Morse, son of Anthony and Anne (Cox) Morse, born probably in Marlborough,[1] Wiltshire, England,[2] about 1632. This is based on his baptismal record. He was baptized at St. Mary's parish, Marlborough, Wiltshire, England, on 29 January 1631/32.[3] This date is corroborated by a deposition he made on March 27, 1677, in which he was that he was about forty-five years old.[4]

Anthony married twice. First he married Elizabeth Knight at Newbury on May 8, 1660.[3][5][p 342][6][7] Elizabeth's death is recorded at Newbury on 29 July 1667.[5][p 667]

His second wife was Mary Barnard. They were married on November 10, 1669, at Newbury.[5][p 342]

In the Newbury birth records, Anthony is consistently called "Anthony, jr.," with no wife named. Those records show the births of the following eight children:[8]

Ruth Morse, d. Anthony, jr., May 20, 1661; d. July 24, 1661 Anthony Morse [Morss, S. dup], s. Anthony [jr. CT.R.], Jan. [1, S. dup.], 1662 [Dec. 31, CT.R.] Joseph Morss, s. Anthony, jr., [July CT.R. and S. dup.] 29, 1665 Elizabeth Morse, d. Anthony, jr., July 29, 1667 John Morse, [Morss, S. dup.], s. Anthony jr., Sept. 13, 1670 Mary Morse, d. Anthony, jr., Aug. 31., 1672 Peter Morse, s. Anthony, jr., Nov. 14, 1674 Sara Morse, d. Anthony, jr., Nov. 23, 1676 [Nov. 25, S. dup.] In his Will, dated 23 February 1677/78,[6][p 45] Anthony Mors "Jun." made bequests to his wife, Mary, my son Anthony, Anthony's brothers Joseph, John and Peter, Anthony's sister Mary, and Anthony's sister and my daughter Elizabeth. He specifically gives "to my daughter Elizabeth her own mother's apparell ...." Wife Mary was still alive when Anthony made his Will, so the implication is that Elizabeth is the daughter of a different wife.

The Inventory of his estate was valued at £221.

Anthony Morse passed away on 25 February 1677/8.[6][9]. He was buried in the Burying Ground of the First Settlers in Newbury.[10]

Research Notes

Several sources are available for the Morse family. Three of note are the 1850 book by Abner Morse,[2] the 1896 book by Henry Dutch Lord,[6] and the 2007 work by Robert Charles Anderson.[3] Each builds on the previous by incorporating newly discovered facts and analysis. For instance, when Abner Morse wrote his book, he did not have access to the will of Anthony the immigrant. Henry Lord had this will available and used it to correct the placement of the children. The Great Migration further corrected the placement of the children by a reexamination of microfilm copies of the original parish registers of St. Mary and of St. Peter and St. Paul parishes, Marlborough, Wiltshire, and the vital records of Newbury, combined with an analysis of the will of Anthony Morse. The vital records of Newbury[5][p 667] have the following entries. MORSE, Elizabeth, w. Anthony, jr., July 29, 1667. MORSE, Elizabeth, w. Lt. Anthony, jr., Feb. 25, 1677. The second entry perhaps should be daughter of Lt. Anthony instead of wife. The first Elizabeth is wife of Lieutenant Anthony Morse. The second Elizabeth is probably the daughter that Savage[7] identifies as, "Eliz. 29 July 1667, when her mo. d. and she d. at 10 yrs." It appears Anthony's wife Elizabeth might have died due to complications of childbirth. There are some discrepancies concerning Anthony's birth. We do have the date of his baptism (29 January 1632) and assume he was born shortly before. However, his headstone reads, "IN MEMORY OF MR. ANTHONY MORSE DIED 1678 AGED 60 YEARS". This implies a birth year of 1678 - 60 = 1618. However, the headstone, from the photograph on the Find A Grave site, appears to be a recent replacement (polished granite) and the age could be in error. Sources
