

Civil War records show Lafayette Benson enlisted in Nashville on December 30, 1861, as a private in Company I, 44th Tennessee Infantry regiment (later known as the 44th Consolidated Tennessee Infantry Regiment). The Muster rolls through 1862 and 1863 show that he was assigned to a clerk's duty in the office of the Provost Marshall. On December 18, 1863 by order of General Hardee, he was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant.
