Charles R. Harmon served in the Union Army during the American Civil War as a member of the 24th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He enrolled on June 11, 1861 near Columbus, Ohio in Company F as a Sergeant. He was later promoted to 1st Lieutenant in Company E. He was commissioned Captain of Company H on June 11, 1862, but was killed-in-action at the Battle of Stones River, Tennessee on December 31, 1862 before he had officially received his commission. This led to some confusion as to his exact rank at his time of death in his widow's pension application, but it was eventually determined that his official rank at his time of death was 1st Lieutenant, and not Captain.
