About Lt. Charles William Morris, USN
A memorial stands at this site, his body was entombed at the Granary in Boston.
He was killed during the war with Mexico in an operation against Tobasco. When in the Tobasco River, and in a boat under a flag of truce, going to the aid of a brother officer he was shot in the neck. He died on the flagship, the USS Cumberland, and his body was returned to Boston for burial.
Ironically, the Cumberland was under the command of his brother, George Upham Morris, when it was sunk by the Merrimac after a courageous battle in Hampton Roads in 1862.
