• 2a William, Marquess of Tullibardine, Duke of Rannoch, Marquess of Blair, Earl of Glen Tilt, Viscount Glenshie and Lord of Strathbran (all S), so created by titular James III 1 Feb 1716/7 with remainder to heirs male; born 14 April 1689; RN; Jacobite 1715 Uprising, hence attainted 17 Feb 1715/6 and his titles settled on his younger brother by Parl; escaped abroad and returned to Scotland with a Spanish force 1719, but after a fresh Jacobite defeat returned to the Continent and lived in exile under the name Kateson; took part in '45 Uprising, when arrested and imprisoned Tower of London, where died unmarried 9 July 1746

A lieutenant-colonel of the Royal Scots Regiment, James Murray first entered politics in 1715 as MP for Perthshire. When Murray’s elder brother, William, became involved in the 1715 Jacobite rebellion he was dishonoured and could no longer inherit his father’s title or property. James himself was a supporter of the Hanoverian kings, and on the death of his father he inherited the family titles and estates instead. He later resigned his military post and replaced the Earl of Islay as Keeper of the Privy Seal of Scotland. In 1746 he accompanied the Duke of Cumberland north to crush the Jacobite army, led by his other brother, Lord George Murray, who at one point besieged the family’s ancestral home of Blair Castle when it was occupied by Hanoverian troops.

James Murray, 2nd Duke of Atholl KT PC (28 September 1690 – 8 January 1764), styled Marquess of Tullibardine between 1715 and 1746, was a Scottish peer.

Atholl was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, the third son of the John Murray, 1st Duke of Atholl, by Lady Catherine, daughter of William Hamilton, Duke of Hamilton.

Atholl was Whig Member of Parliament for Perthshire from 1715 to 1724 and was elected a Scottish Representative Peer in 1733. In 1734 he was made a Knight of the Thistle. In 1736 he succeeded as 7th Baron Strange and to the Lordship of Mann through his grandmother. He served as Governor of the Isle of Man from 1736 to 1744.

Atholl married firstly Jane, daughter of Thomas Frederick, on 28 April 1726. They had four children:

• John Murray, Marquess of Tullibardine (1728–1729), died in infancy.
• Lady Jane Murray (c. 1730–1747)
• Lady Charlotte Murray (1731–1805)
• James Murray, Marquess of Tullibardine (1735–1736), died in infancy.

After his first wife's death in 1748 he married secondly Jean, daughter of John Drummond, 10th of Lennoch, on 7 May 1749, in Edinburgh. There were no children from this marriage.

Atholl died in 1764, aged 73 at Dunkeld, Scotland, and was buried at Inveresk. He was succeeded by in the barony of Strange by his daughter, Lady Charlotte and in the Scottish titles by his nephew, John, the son of George Murray, a general in the Jacobite Rising which the second Duke did not join.

He married, firstly, Jane Frederick, daughter of Thomas Frederick and Leonora Maresco, on 28 April 1726. (103) James, second Duke of Atholl, third son of John (No. 102 below), born 28th September 1690 ; died 8th January 1764. He was Lord Privy Seal for Scotland, and was M.P. for Perthshire 1715-24. In 1736, on the death of his kinsman, James, tenth Earl of Derby, he succeeded in right of his grandmother (see No. 101) to the sovereignty of the Isle of Man and to the English Barony of Strange, created 1628. He married, first, 28th April 1726, Jane, daughter of Thomas Frederick, who died 13th June 1748, having had:

• 103(a) John Murray, born 12th September 1728; died 23rd April 1729.
• 103(b) James Murray, born 28th March 1735 ; died 12th February 1736. He married, second, 11th May 1749, Jean, daughter of John Drummond of Megginch, but had no issue by her. He was succeeded by his nephew (No. 105 below).
