About Lt. Col. John Grattan Cabell, CSA
He was born at "Montevideo" in Buckingham County, Va.
John attended Washington College in Lexington, and graduated from the University of Virginia medical school. He married Sally M. "Sallie" Tankersley in Richmond on 15 February 1844. After her death in 1855, he remarried to Elizabeth Coles.
He was commissioned as Major of the 6th Virginia Cavalry on 11 September 1861. He was promoted Lt. Colonel on 14 April 1862, and was later commended by Gen. J.E.B. Stuart for gallantry. He was named Surgeon on 19 September 1863 before being discharged for disability in July 1864.
After the Civil War, he continued his medical practice.
