- Philip joined the army in 1915 and served with cavalry in the United States and in the Philippines. He was with the U.S. cavalry along the border with Mexico in 1917. After he retired from the army, he was president of the International Institute of Boston and president of the Children's Art Center, vice president of United South End Settlements, and chairman of the Dedham and Canton Red Cross. He was a 32nd degree Mason.
