• Educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.
• Fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches three times.
• Lieutenant in 1916 in the service of the 1st Life Guards, Instruction Machine Gun Corps.
• Decorated with the award of the Companion, Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1917.
• Decorated with the award of the Silver Medal of Military Valour of Italy.
• Lieutenant-Colonel in the service of the Coldstream Guards, Reserve of Officers.
• Lieutenant-Colonel in the service of the 4th City of London Regiment (Territorial Army).
• Secretary of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem between 1926 and 1937.
• Invested as a Commander, Royal Victorian Order (C.V.O.) in 1953.
