He lived alone in his 20-roomed country mansion 'The Ross" in Fernigair, close to Hamilton, Lanarkshire.

He was also, at one time, a class One football referee which qualified him to teach other whistler's how to take charge of games.

Once a leading military figure, he spent the last years of his life immersed in the world of stamp-collecting.

By the time of his death Sir John, who served in the Royal Engineers, had amassed a collection of rare stamps worth £229,000.

His entire wealth, revealed in his recently published will was valued at £6,841,210.

As part of his will Sir John left an instruction that £750 be passed to St Mary's Episcopal Church in Hamilton.

But bizarrely, he insisted the entire bequest would only be paid provided a male minister was running the church.

He instructed the executors of his estate to pay out only £500 to the church if a woman was in charge.

...

The majority of Sir John's vast legacy, including land worth £4 million has been handed down to his nephew Robert John Graham-Campbell who lives in Kent.

The family title though passes to Sir John's cousin Sir Simon Conran Hamilton Watson, 68, now the sixth baronet, who lives in London.

He also inherited the family coat of arms and the family collection of war medals.

A Who's Who entry for Sir John, written in 2000, described him as, 'Finding it difficult to mix with the people of Hamilton'.

Sir John inherited his title from his father Sir Derrick who became the fourth. Baronet after his elder brother John was killed in action in 1918 during the first world war, aged just 19.
