About Lt. Colonel Joseph G. W. Wood (CSA)

Joseph George Warren Wood, Confederate infantry officer and farmer, was born on January 14, 1836, in South Carolina.. He was the oldest of eight children. The family was relatively wealthy, having fifty-six slaves in 1850. At some point before the Civil War, Joseph Wood married a woman named Sarah and moved to Titus County, Texas, where he farmed land near Mount Pleasant.

Wood began his military career on April 25, 1862, when he enrolled at Mount Pleasant as a captain in the Eighteenth Texas Infantry (unofficially called Joseph G. W. Wood's Infantry), organized on May 13, 1862. On April 9, 1864, he was promoted to major and then lieutenant colonel on April 30 of that same year. The Eighteenth served in the Trans-Mississippi Department for the duration of the war and participated in the 1864 Red River campaign and saw action at Milliken's Bend, Pleasant Hill, Natchitoches, Mark's Mill, and Jenkins' Ferry. In early 1865 the unit was sent to Hempstead, Texas, where it was disbanded.

Following the war, Wood returned to Titus County where he worked as a farmer and then a bookkeeper and clerk by 1880. He died on July 20, 1896, and is buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Titus County.
