Stephen Gardiner was a remarkable man. As an Inspector of Schools, as an Officer of the Volunteer Corps, as a family man, as a warden of the Anglican Church, and as a Justice of the Peace, he was recognised in the colony of Western Australia as a citizen of the highest standing. However, from a Physical Education point of view, he will be remembered as the first Superintendent of Drill, and for his part in implementing drill and physical exercise schedules into schools. Stephen Gardiner pioneered the way for the development of Physical Education as an integral part of the curriculum in Western Australian schools.
