Frederick Jacobse Bergen, bap. Nov. 27th, 1681 ; d. prior to 1762 ; m. Gerretye, dau. of Gerrit Vechte.* Resided on Staten Island on a farm, in the north pre cinct or division, which he purchased of Catharine,, wid. of George Hooglant, 20 aeres of which he sold, June 10th, 1727, for £110, to John Van Pelt. May 2d, 1726, he also sold for £225, to Garret Kroezen, 80 acres lying on the great plain in the rear of the land patented to Cornelius Corson and Company, which plot he had recently pur chased of Hendrick Kroesen and others.* On the Rich mond county records his name is written " Frederick Berge." About this period farmers were in the habit of turning out their cattle on the commons for pasturage, each owner having a distinctive mark, which was record ed on the public records. March 5th, 1740, on the coun ty records of Richmond Co., it is recorded of " Frederick Berge," that " the ear mark of his horse kind, cattle, sheep, &c, is a swallow tail at the end of the right ear, and a half moon or half circle in the upper part of the left ear." In 1715, he was a private in Capt. David Acrsen's com pany of Brooklyn ; in 1738, a Lieutenant of militia in Richmond Co., and in 1727 and 1728, a deacon in the Reformed Duteh church on the north side of Staten Isl and. From Richmond Co. he removed to Somerset Co., N. J., where he owned and cultivated a farm and died, his will being dated May 28th, 1757, proved Nov. 22t1, 1762, and recorded in the office of the Secretary of State of N. J., in which he devises his farm to his son Jacob.
