Lieutenant Governor of New York, 1927-29. Grandson of Congressman Erastus Corning. Brother of Congressman Parker Corning. Father of Albany Mayor Erastus Corning 2nd. Educated at Albany Boys Academy and Groton School, Groton, Massachusetts. Graduate, Yale University, 1906. Married Louise Maxwell, November 25, 1908. Four children – Erastus 2nd, (1909-83); Louise (1911-54); Harriet (1916-66); Edwin, Jr. (1919-64). Executive, Ludlum Steel Company, Watervliet, New York, rising to become secretary-treasurer, 1908 and president, 1910. Director, State Bank of Albany. Board of Directors, Albany Savings Bank. Treasurer, Albany Felt Company. Breeder of prize winning horses, sheep and cows. Breeder of champion Irish wolfhounds.

Active in politics, worked with brother Parker and Albany's O'Connell brothers to take control of Albany County Democratic party and then defeat Republican organization of William Barnes. Member, city and county Democratic Committees. Chairman, Albany County Democratic Committee. Chairman, state Democratic party, 1926-28. Democratic presidential elector, 1924. Selected as party's nominee for Lieutenant Governor, 1926, and was elected as Governor Al Smith won reelection. Likely candidate for Governor in 1928 until he suffered in August while on New York to Maine train a heart attack and stroke brought on by years of smoking and lack of exercise. Lost in 1929 stock market crash much of wealth he recouped after father's depletion of family fortune in late 1800s. Health continued to decline, resulting in amputation of leg. Died after failing to recover from second leg amputation. Member, presiding body, All Saints Cathedral. President, Fort Orange Club. Member, Yale Club of New York City. Member, Yale Graduate Club. Member, Yale Elizabethan Club. Member, Schuyler Meadows Country Club. Member, Mohawk Country Club of Schenectady.
