Brief Biography: James Bradford* (1684-1762) was born in Norwich CT and inherited some farmland from his father in Canterbury CT. He acquired more farmland in Canterbury, some of which was passed down to his son, William Bradford (1718-1781). He prospered as a farmer, raised cattle and tanned hides. He served in his local militia as an Ensign and later as a Lieutenant. Local historians refer to him as "LT. James Bradford" and he was regarded as a "most respected citizen", probably in deference to his moderate wealth and political offices. He was a Deputy from Canterbury to the General Court in Hartford. When he died he left an estate of more than 6,000 pounds and 600 acres of land, an unusually large estate for his time and place.
