James was killed by confederate cannon fire the day before the Battle of Corydon, in Harrison Co IN:

"CURRENT, James H.
Civil War Veteran
Lieutenant James H. Current. Born June 7, 1841. Died July 9, 1863.
Note: James H. Current, son of Garret Current and Elizabeth Deen, was born in Heth Township of Harrison County, Indiana. James married Mary C. Byers, daughter of Michael Dent Byers and Susan Miller on 31 July 1862, in Harrison County, Indiana. 2nd Lt. James H. Current was an officer in the Mauckport Rifle Company of the Harrison County Home Guard. As Morgan’s Raiders were crossing the Ohio River to Morvin’s Landing the evening of July 8, 1863 (the day before the Battle of Corydon), 2nd Lt. James H. Current was one of the cannon servers firing on Morgan’s men at Brandenburg, KY. He and George Nance of the Laconia Guards Company, took a direct hit from one of the confederate’s cannons. George Nance was killed instantly. As the site was being evacuated, James was taken a few miles up the road and treated by Dr. Henry K. Deen. James Current died shortly after midnight from his wounds on 9 July 1863. The cannon they had been serving had been placed on top of a high ridge above Morvin’s Landing and was being fired towards Brandenburg, KY. His widow later married Benjamin F. Richards on 12 July 1866 in Harrison County."
