Lieutenant James Fichat (b. 1778 d. 1825) of the Royal Marines who came to the Cape at the time of the Second British occupation. He originally came from Manchester and got permission of the Lord Commissioners of the Admiralty to settle at the Cape in 1818 on half‐pay. He at first resided temporarily at 24 Loop Street, before purchasing, with money he brought out from England, the estate Veldhausen in 1819 which he renamed “The Grove”. The estate was one of the original free burger farms’ Velthuijsen, granted as such by van Riebeeck on 20th September 1660. His career had been one of service in the Royal Marines, with it being recorded that at one stage he was private secretary to Sir Thomas Stanford‐ Raffles at Batavia in 1811, who is credited with being the founder of Singapore. From the Fichat bible it was shown that James Fichat married Maria Cornelia Welhelmelia Styne at the Cape of Good Hope on 5th September 1808 and that he died on 6th July 1825 at The Grove, Wynberg aged 47.

James and Maria Fichat in 1825 filed a Will and nominated as their sole beneficiaries their children. When James Fichat died in 1825 The Grove was sold for 80 600 guilders. The estate was said to be 99 Morgan in extent and the increase in its value, it was stated, was due to a great improvement in the quality of the grounds and buildings.

The Grove/Feldhausen was later to become the home of the famous astronomer Sir John Herschel from 1834 to 1838 during his stay at the Cape to map the Southern Celestial sky. Over the years the estate was much reduced and in 1958 the manor house, built in the classic Cape Dutch style, was demolished and a school erected on the site. The Grove Primary School covers some of the original estate in the suburb of Claremont.

So the Boyes family can look to Captain Robert Nairne Boyes as the progenitor of the family in the Cape and South Africa, after he landed in Cape Town with his regiment in 1824. But, it was through his father‐in‐law, Lt James Fichat, Royal Marine, who had come to the Cape with the second British occupation, that he met and married Maria Styne in 1808, who would have been of Dutch origin. This line through his wife, Maria Catherine Fitchat, therefore pre‐dates the arrival of R.N.Boyes at the Cape of Good Hope.
