According to The Otis Genealogy (NEHGR, 1851) and James Savage's Genealogical Dictionary, John was the son of Edward and Jane (or Joan) Baker. Edward was a freeman in Lynn, 1630, went to Northampton about 1658 where he had land grants. He lived there a number of years but returned to Lynn, where he died in 1687. He gave estate to sons John of Dedham, Edward, and Thomas, of Lynn.
