According to The Otis Genealogy (NEHGR, 1851) and James Savage's Genealogical Dictionary, John was the son of Edward and Jane (or Joan) Baker. Edward was a freeman in Lynn, 1630, went to Northampton about 1658 where he had land grants. He lived there a number of years but returned to Lynn, where he died in 1687. He gave estate to sons John of Dedham, Edward, and Thomas, of Lynn.

Edward Baker, sr. was buried in Lynn Mar. 17, 1687. Joan d. in Lynn Apr. 9, 1693. (Lynn VRs)

• Mary, was borne Jan. 12, 1684.
• Joseph, was borne March 29, 1690.

There is a Baker monument in Westwood Cemetery that names John and Abigail.
