About Lt. John Martin Guest

The Dorcus born 1772 that is married to Moses Guest, son of this Lt. John Martin Guest and Sarah Guess. That Dorcas (Moses's wife) did not marry Moses's father Lt. John Guest.

Notes for JOHN GUEST: DNA tests performed in 2006 and 2014 prove the Red River County, TX Guest families are closely related to the William Guest, Sr. family of VA, NC, SC. The relationship of John Martin Guest to William Guest, Sr. is unproven, and it is quite possible John Martin Guest is not a son of William, but related in some other manner.

John Martin Guest can be found on several Guilford County,NC records between 1780 and 1783. His full name "John Martin Guest" is given on most of the records.

A Lt. John Martin Gist filed an Am Rev Claim in 1786 at Warrenton, NC for his service in the NC Line during the war.

Add'l Notes: The Guest families found in Warren County, TN in the early 1800s were probably the sons of Lt. John Martin Guest, who was born about 1745. Lt. John Martin Guest joined William Guest, Sr. in Wilkes County, NC about 1783, and moved with William Guest, Sr. (c1725) to Pendleton District, SC about 1786, and was there living near William, Sr. for the 1790 census. John Martin Guest apparently moved to east TN about 1792, and descendants moved to Warren County, TN, northern Alabama and further west in the early 1800's.

Add'l Notes: Lt. John Martin Guest was probably a son of William Guest, Sr. If Lt. John Martin Guest was not a son of William Guest, Sr., then he was almost certainly a brother, cousin, nephew or other close relative. These two families lived near each other in NC and SC from about 1783 through 1791, and the relatedness of the two families seems apparent from their close association. All the test subjects in Guest group experienced 0, 1 or 2 random marker shifts or mutations in their family line, and all the Guest test subjects appear to be about equally related. See the family descriptions on page 10 for more information about these two families.

One 340 acre tract of land calls for a location on both sides Beaver dam Creek “including William Sharp’s improvement at Reed’s corner along a conditional line between William Sharp and John Brady on a cross fence down a small branch, thence along the fence twenty-nine poles striking the creek at a bent so up said creek to Miller’s line where John Guest (Gist) now lives.” [Vance%E2%80%99s note: the phrase “where John Guest (Gist) now lives” meant during the time the land was surveyed, abt 1785.]

This John Gist was the son of an Indian trader and a Cherokee woman. He was kinsman of Sikwayi, or Sequoya, whose English name was George Gist, the inventor of the Cherokee alphabet of syllables. Years later Aaron Guest of Kentucky acknowledge the receipt of his part of “the estate of my father Aaron Guest, Deceased, where Jason Cloud and John Guest (Gist) were executors.”

Unfortunately, Dr. Ridenour gives NO source information as to where he obtained this information. We have a possible unknown brother of Sequoyah, which would agree in great detail to what Aunt Lorena wrote me, when she said her mother had said her grandma, Harriet [Guess] Brown being “niece or great niece” of Sequoyah.
