About Lt. John William Walls, (USA)

Veteran - Mexican War & Civil War

He enrolled in the U.S. Army, for duty in the Mexican War, 21 May 1846 in Stanford, Lincoln Co., KY, as a private and served in Capt. Daugherty's Second Regiment of Ky. Inf., which later became Co. G. He was discharged in New Orleans, LA, on 10 Jun 1847 and returned to the Casey-Lincoln Co. area of KY.

John again enrolled for active duty when the Civil War came to KY. He was mustered into the U.S. Army on 2 Jan 1862 as a second Lieutenant at Camp Harrod in Mercer Co., and served in Capt. Hannibal Downey's Company, the 19th Reg. of KY Inf., which later became Co. E. John was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 12 Aug 1862 at Cumberland Gap, TN, but the toll of exposure and lack of food was too much for his nearly forty year old body. He resigned his commission and was discharged at Young's Point, LA on 5 Mar 1863, before his unit took part in the famous Battle of Vicksburg.
