About Lt. Sidney Carter (CSA)
Lt. Sidney Carter was mortally wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. He died one week later on July 8, 1863.
Headstone marker for 2nd Lieutenant Sidney Carter is in Section A of the Connecticut Plot in the Gettysburg National Cemetery. Carter is one of the known Confederates accidentally interred in a Union plot. He served as Adjutant with Co. A, of the 14th South Carolina Infantry Regiment., largely made up of soldiers from the Florence-Darlington area.
Lt. Sidney Carter, "Sid" sent letters home to his wife Ellen Timmons Carter, known commonly as "Bet" and "Bettie" during the unit's travels. The letters, for the most part, were well preserved, and led to the now out-of-print book "Dear Bet-The Carter Letters 1861-1863" by Bessie Mell Lane of Clemson, South Carolina. The book is registered in the Library of Congress. It was printed in 1978 and a 2nd printing was in 1979. Sidney was killed at Gettysburg, and the letters stopped. His brother James was killed at the Battle of Chancellorsville.
