Biography Thomas Pittman was the son of Capt Thomas Pitman and Frances UNKNOWN Pitman, born between 1653 and 1666, when Frances died in Surry County, VA.

Tithables: Based on tithables, Thomas Jr. could have been born as late as 1661; he appeared in the list of tithables in Lawnes Creek parish, Surry Co., VA as "Thomas Junr" on 10 June 1677[1] along with Captain Thomas Pittman-1252, who was listed with Thomas' brother William.[2] The initial reference in 1677 could potentially set his birthdate at 1661, since only males 16 or older were taxable; however, he was probably born sometime before that. Tithables nine years earlier show Capt Thomas Pitman in 1668 with 3 other taxable 16+-year-old males in his household, which could have included his sons Thomas 2 and William 2, both of whom appear consistently in Tithables after 1677.[3]

Marriages Based on Tithables, Thomas had at least 3 children (William, Edward, and Thomas Jr are listed in the Tithables before 1702)[4] before he married Mary Holleman Chambers in 1702. Tithables records show that Thomas Jr was living with Richard Holleman (his step-grandfather) in 1702, the year that Thomas Sr married Mary, Richard's daughter-in-law.[5]

Thomas married Mary Chambers (possibly Hollyman/Holleman) in 1702. They had several children; she died before 1720.[6]

After Mary died, Thomas Pitman married Elizabeth Lancaster, daughter of Robert Lancaster; the marriage was recorded in 1720.[7] They were thought to be Charity's great-grand parents. [8]

Thomas named 14 children, 2 boys still minors, when his will was written in 1728. Of these, at least 3 (Thomas, William, and Edward, possibly deceased young since he appears in the Tithables only once in 1699[9]) were from an unknown mother; 7 others (including Ambrose) were likely from Mary; and Elizabeth was the mother of the youngest four.

Court Records There are additional mentions of Thomas Jr in court records:

On 2 Sep 1671, Thomas Jr. was a witness to a sale by Joseph and Susan Wall (his sister).[10] Thomas Pitman Sr. gave to William, son of Thomas, Jr. the gift of a heifer.[11] Death Death: Date: 26 SEP 1730 Place: Isle of Wight, Isle of Wight, Virginia, United States Like his father who died in 1691 at age 77, Thomas was long-lived. He was probably in his 70s when he died.
