Civil War Union Army Officer. The son of Brigadier General John Joseph Abercrombie, and the grandson of Major General Robert Patterson, he was commissioned as a Volunteer Aide-de-Camp on the staff of his father on January 22, 1862. A year later, on January 12, 1863, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company I, 127th New York Volunteer Infantry. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant of Company G on March 1, 1865, he served until honorably mustered out on June 30, 1865.
He was the husband of Lily Mary Nugent (1848-1925).
