About Lt. Whitfield Butler Brooks, USA
Vera Cruz. Contreras. Churubusco He came forth as a flower and was cut down. At the call of his country, he marched with the Palmetto Regiment to the Theatre of War, and on the bloody field of Churubusco, received a mortal wound while gallantly charging the enemy. On the field of battle in momentary expectation of death, his only question was, "Have I discharged by duty?" The reply of his gallant general is his best epitaph; "Yes, like a man you are an honor to yourself, your family, and your country." Sacred, the hero's sleep till time shall cease to run and ne'er beside his noble grave may any pass and fail to crave a blessing on the fallen brave.
