The earlier records of Hempstead mention the ear mark of William Nichols' cattle as "A crop on the ear and two nicks under it which was his Father-in-law's, Samuel Embree, who died June 26, 1729."
Lieut. William Nichols was married by Rev Robert Jennings. He joined Col. Gooch's Regiment in the Spanish and English War, in the expedition to attack Carthagena, Columbia, he was killed when scaling the walls of a fort, cut in two by a chain shot while leading his storming party in the attack on the Spanish. A chain shot is two cannonballs, linked together by a section of chain. Lieut. William Nichols married in Hempstead and his 3 children were born there. His daughter Sarah Searing continued to reside at Hempstead. Lieut. William's marriage and the baptisms of his children are recorded in St. George's Church, Hempstead. He was with the forced of the British when on Apr. 9, 1741 he was shot leading a charge a Cartagena, South America.
