About Lubin Alma Welker

Lubin Alma Welker was born November 25, 1891, to Charles Wesley Welker and Margaret Ann Ward Welker. In the 1900 U.S. Federal Census, Lubin was 7 years old, living with his mother, Margaret, who was divorced from Lubin's father. Also in the home were his older siblings, Mary, 14, Exeriel, 12, and Hazen Victor, 10. The census indicated that Margaret had 8 children, 5 of whom were still living. Margaret was working as a farmer and owned her farm free from a mortgage. She was born in Idaho and her father in England and mother in Wales. All of her children with Charles Wesley Welker were born in Utah.

By 1909, Margaret had married again to a man named Corney Edwards. In 1910 they were living in Frontier, Uinta, Wyoming, but her children are not living in the home with them. In the census it said: Corney, 52 and Margaret, 44, and Corney was working as an engineer in a coal mine. Eight years later, Margaret passed away on April 17, 1918, at the age 52 years old. She was living in Weber County, Utah, at the time of her death.

Lubin Alma Welker completed his U.S. World War I Draft Registration Card in September of 1916 and described himself as being of medium height and slender build with grey eyes and light hair. He was living at 268 2nd Street in Ogden, Utah, and was 25 years old at the time. He was working as a railroad brakeman for the Union Pacific Railroad in Evanston, Wyoming, and Ogden, Utah, and he was supporting a father and mother and sister plus 3 children, and was single at the time.

In the 1920 U.S. Census Lubin was married to Laura Beatrice Sherner Welker. He was 28 years old, she was 22, and their son, Charles S. Welker, one year, four months old. They were living in Ogden, Utah, in a rented home at 135 Second Street. Lubin was working as a switchman for the railroad. His wife Laura's parents were both born in Denmark. By 1930, Lubin and Laura are 38 and 32, and their children were Charles, 11, Mary, 9, Adam, 7, and Mark, 3 years, four months old. They were still living in Ogden, Utah, and they owned their home which was valued at $2,000.00, located at 122 West Second Street. Lubin was working as a real estate salesman.

In 1940 the family was still living on Second Street in Ogden, and another son had been born, Donald, in 1931. They owned their own home which was valued at $4,500. Also living in the home was Lubin's mother-in-law, Mary Clausse, a 71 year old widow. Lubin had achieved his high school education, Laura had 3 years of high school, Charles had two years of college, Adam was in his 3rd year of high school, Mark was in the 7th grade and Donald in the 2nd grade. Laura's mother also had four years of high school. Lubin was working as a Field Representative with HOLC and Charles was a farm laborer. For the year 1939, Lubin earned $2,156 income and Charles $450. There was a note on the census record saying that his checks were mailed to Washington. Lubin worked 48 weeks that year and Charles 40 weeks and they both were working 48 hours per week.

In a U.S. City Directory for 1954, Lubin and Laura were listed president and manager of Welker's Inc., their real estate company which also handled insurance, loans and home building. They were living at 122 Second Avenue. Their son Mark was working as a city firefighter, and he and his wife, Charmian, were living at 785 Cross. Their son Donald was working as a salesman at Schubach Jewelery Company, and living at 3320 Quincy Avenue. Adam was working as an employee of Utah General Depot, and living with his wife, Bonnie, at 2527 Porter Avenue, Apartment 4. There was a Charles R. Welker living at 2970 Adams Avenue, but no wife or occupation was listed for him. However, in a 1951 directory, Charles and his wife Constance were living at 522 17th Street and he was working as a salesman at the Welker real estate business. Victor H. and his wife Cleone Welker were living nearby at 366 32nd Avenue, and there was a Mrs. Vera S. Welker also listed as a saleswoman at Schuback Jewelery Co., living in Clearfield, Utah.

In a 1960 directory listing, Adam was an employee of HAFB, Charles a waiter at Kay's Noodle Factory, Donald a technician at AMF, Lubin was still doing real estate, and his wife Laura was a secretary for their firm.
