Lucius William O'Brien, the eldest son of the 14th baron, was born at Bishop Waltham, Hants, on June 21, 1864. He went to Eton in 1878, to the Rev. Edward Hale's house, and left in 1880.

This family of O'Brien is shown in the "Complete Peerage" as descended from Murrough O'Brien, Prince of Thomond, who in 1514 resigned to King Henry VIII. his "captainship, title, superiority, and country", and was created Earl of Thomond.

Many members of the family later distinguished themselves, notably the first Earl of Inchiquin and the first Marquess of Thomond, dignities which are now extinct.

During the troubles after the War he was not interfered with. On the establishment of the Free State he became a member of the Senate. He was president of the Ennis branch of the British Legion, and took an active interest in its work.

Lord Inchiquin married in 1896 Ethel Jane, elder daughter and co-heir of Mr. Johnstone J. Foster, of Moor Park, Ludlow, and Cliffe Hall, Lightcliffe, and had three sons and three daughters.
