Birth: Oct. 27, 1817 Shalersville Portage County Ohio, USA Death: Jul. 10, 1895 Kendall County Illinois, USA
Sandwich Free Press July 18, 1895 Lucy Louisa, daughter of Daniel and Abigail Hine Burroughs, was born at Ravenna Portage Co, Ohio, October 27, 1817. Died at the home of her son George E Gifford, near Sandwich, July 10, 1895 aged 77 years, 7 months, and 11 days. She came to Illinois with her parents in 1836, settling on a farm bordering on Fox River in Kendall County, and there resided until married to Mr Hadden of Big Rock. One son, Nelson M Hadden, who survives her was born to them. Left a widow while yet young, was but the beginning of a life filled with many cares. On the 16th of November, 1847, she was married to Freeman Gifford, a widower and father of six children, all of whom are still living. Of this second marriage, seven children were born. Two of these, William, who died in infancy and Lillian, his twin sister, who was laid to rest October 19, 1892 preceded her to the spirit world. The five who survive her are: L.D. Gifford, Cabrey, IL; Cornelia Willis, Ellsworth, IA; George E Gifford, Sandwich; Charles E Gifford Cabrey, IL; May Gifford, Valparaiso, IN. Mrs Gifford was a woman of rare worth and excellence. Intrusted with the care and responsibility of a large family, she nobly and faithfully discharged her duty to them, and her children "rise up to call her blessed". She was benevolent in her disposition and won the love and respect of all who knew her. In early life, she united with the Christian Church and in all the years of her pilgrimage she adorned her profession by a Godly walk. Her end was peaceful. On Tuesday evening, she retired in usual health. Wednesday morning she did not rise at her accustomed hour, and a visit to her room revealed the fact that at some time during the early morning her spirit had taken its flight, but so peaceful her departure that she lay as if sleeping. The funeral services, conducted by Rev RH Nye, were held at the residence of Mr George Gifford on Friday, July 13th, and the body was interred in the family lot in the Griswold Cemetery. Besides the children above mentioned, two brothers survive her, one of whom -- Dr Burroughs, of Batavia, IL -- was present at the funeral.
