About Lucy Young
In the history of the Taieri Plains, "Tales of the Years that are Gone", the following is written of the first school in the area. "Lucy Jefferis one of the pioneers conducted a small private school for a time in the Racecourse Hotel - her family's residence, for the children who were unable to attend East Taieri school due to distance, and lack of road and bridges." The school was closed in 1860 when Lucy married.
