Accident 27. — June 18. - Louis Dellaque, Italian, was instantly killed in No. 5 shaft, Calumet branch of the Calumet and Hecla mine.

Dellaque was employed as a sprinkler, his duty being to keep the timbers of the shaft wet, to prevent the possible chance of fire in the shaft. He attempted to cross the shaft when the skip was descending just above him, and being warned by his own countrymen, in his own language, not to cross the shaft, he paid no attention to the warning and got in the shaft, when the skip struck him on the head and passed over his body.

An inquest was held before Justice Sowden.

The jury rendered a verdict: "That Louis Dellaque came to his death while working in No. 5 shaft, Calumet, by being struck with a descending skip in the shaft, attaching no blame to anyone."

Mine Inspector's Report for Houghton county, 1894.
