About Luigi Loccisano

GEDCOM Note

I was able to confirm the correct Luigi Loccisano by Aunt Mae's recollection of the following two death certificates:

1) Luigi Loccisano's death, which she remembered was around year 1935 in New Castle, Pennsylvania. I received the death certificate from the Pennsylvania Division of Vital Records. I am certain this is the correct death certificate. It gives the following information: Luigi Loccisano, date of death July 14, 1935 in New Castle, Pennsylvania. It gave his wife as Marianna Loccisano, gave his profession as a Laboror in a Stone Quary, it gave his year of birth as 1859 (gave age as 76 years old), and his parents names as GIUSEPPE LOCCISANO and MARIANNA SEVERINO. The death certificate was filled out by Rocco Loccisano of Hillsville, Pennsylvania.

2) Maria Teresa Demasi, who was a sister to the above Luigi Loccisano, was remembered by Aunt Mae to have died around the year 1940 in the Bronx about 2 years after she arrived in the USA as an older woman. Aunt Mae also remembered that she was living with her son Joe Demasi. I received this death certificate from NEW YORK CITY DEPARTMENT OF RECORDS AND INFORMATION SERVICES-- MUNICIPAL ARCHIVES--31 CHAMBERS ST, NEW YORK, NY 10007. I am sure it is the correct person since the informant on the death certificate was son, Joe Demasi, and she had only been in this country for 2 years. The certificate gives the following information: Maria Theresa Demasi, died June 14, 1940 in the Bronx. She was age 71 at this time. Her place of residence was the Bronx. She was widowed, and does housework. She had been in the USA for 2 years and her parents are GIUSEPPE LOCCISANO and MARIANNA SAVERINE (this was common for the surname Severino to be changed to Saverine here in the USA).

3) The passenger list of Luigi Loccisano, with son Rocco Giuseppe Loccisano, on August 14, 1899 gave Luigi Loccisano's age as 40 years old. This is another confirmation that he was born in 1859.

(Aunt Mae also knew that Luigi Loccisano was younger than his wife Marianna Ritorto, which is consistent with what I found.)

I had additional confirmation of the correct Luigi Loccisano by two documents received by the Civil Records Office in Gioiosa Jonica:

1) The marriage of Luigi Loccisano to Marianna Ritorto on November 15, 1884 gave the parents as Giuseppe Loccisano and Marianna Severino and his expected age of 25 years old (indicating he was born between November 1858- November 1859.)

2) Mario Racco of the Civil Records office in Gioiosa Jonica found the same birth certificate of Luigi Loccisano from his office as I did independently from the microfilmed records at the Mormon Church. It gave the following information: Luigi Loccisano, born June 22, 1859, parents Giuseppe Loccisano and Marianna Severino. (On the actual copy of the birth certificate that I found on the microfilmed records at the Mormon Church, it gave me more complete information: Luigi Loccisano, born June 22, 1859, parents Giuseppe Loccisano, son of deceased DOMINICO, age 36, lives Gioiosa and Marianna Severino, age 29, lives Gioiosa. SEE BELOW.)

The final source of confirmation that I had the correct Luigi Loccisano was the link up I made with the Loccisanos of Ellwood City Pensylvania:

3) I knew that we had relatives who were related in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania. Infact, I knew that Nicola Loccisano ( the patriarch of the Ellwood City clan) was a 1st cousin to Rocco Giuseppe Loccisano and his father was a brother to Luigi Loccisano (in my direct lineage); I was able to contact Pete Loccisano of Arizona who gave me Nicolas parents as Dominico Loccisano and Giuditta Totino. After talking to Nick Loccisano, I looked in my family tree program for the siblings of Luigi Loccisano and found a Dominico Antonio Loccisano. The determing factor as to whether this was the same person who Nick Loccisano was referring to, would be the spouses name: Sure enough it was Maria Giuditta Teotino, as expected. This marriage gave the following information: Dominico Antonio Loccisano marries Maria Giuditta Teotino on November 11, 1881. At this point I knew it was the correct marriage, and one more confirmation of the correct parents of Luigi Loccisano being Giuseppe Loccisano and Marianna Severino. The reason I had the marriage in my family tree program in the first place is because I "assumed" that the Dominico Antonio Loccisano was the brother of Luigi Loccisano simply because his marriage certificate gave his parents as Giuseppe Loccisano and Marianna Severino.

  • ********************************************************************* ***************************************** This is the information that I found on the actual microfilmed copy of the BIRTH CERTIFICATE of Luigi Loccisano from the microfilmed records at the Mormon Church: Luigi Loccisano, born June 22, 1859, parents Giuseppe Loccisano, son of deceased DOMINICO, age 36, lives Gioiosa and Marianna Severino, age 29, lives Gioiosa. I am sure this is the correct Luigi Loccisano
    • ******************************************************************** ****************************************** IMPORTANT BIRTH CERTIFICATE FOUND OF LUIGI LOCCISANO'S SISTER: This certificate gives the 1st names of both the paternal and maternal grandfathers: Maria Rosa Loccisano, born August 29, 1866, parents are Giuseppe Loccisano, son of deceased DOMINICO and Marianna Severino, daughter of deceased VINCENZO. This is important to confirm that I link up to the past correctly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------- OTHER FACTS ABOUT LUIGI LOCCISANO

Aunt Mae said he was a pioneer in bringing many people to USA from Gioiosa. He came most likely only 2 times ( possibly more). I have never found any records that indicate that he was ever naturalized. On one of his earlier passenger lists, he came over with friend Pasquale Agostino who settled in Hillsville, Pennsylvania (where he later lived with his wife and children). According to Aunt Mae, he was just a friend and not related; it was the other Agostino family in New Castle who were related. (This is the family who I believe to be Dominico and he had a wife with the maiden name Gallo.) See NOTES under ROSA AGOSTINO.)

Aunt Mae was very close to her grandfather Luigi Loccisano, who died when she was about 16 years old. She would go to the opera with him when she was a young girl (and Juan Romero would go along; this inspired him to go into acting). She also remembers riding on the trolly cars with her grandfather Luigi and recalls that he worked in the quarry and worked very hard. She recalls that he liked to drink wine very often.

Luigi Loccisano had a male relative( who was not married) with the surname Colucci. He lived in Poland, Ohio. Aunt Mae was not sure how he was related... Possibly a cousin.
