Luke Gardiner, 1st Viscount Mountjoy was born on 7 February 1745 the son of Rt. Hon. Charles Gardiner and Florinda Norman.

  • He married, firstly, Elizabeth Montgomery, daughter of Sir William Montgomery of Magbiehill, 1st Bt. and Hannah Tomkyns, on 3 July 1773.
  • He married Margaret Wallis on 20 October 1793.4 He died on 5 June 1798 at age 53, killed in action.1
  • He was County Tyrone.4 He was educated Eton and St John's College Cambridge.
  • He was Member of Parliament (M.P.) (I Parl) County Dublin in 1773.
  • He was Privy Counsellor (P.C.) (I ) in 1780.4 He was created 1st Baron Mountjoy, of Tyrone in 1785.
  • On 19 September 1789 as also earlier BARON MOUNTJOY OF MOUNTJOY.
  • He was married 2nd Margaret, milliner, eldest daughter of Hector Wallis, of Spring Mount, Queen's County (now County Laois), and was killed at New Ross, County Wexford, 5 June 1798 leading his regt in an attempt to suppress the Uprising of that year by h on 20 October 1793.
  • He was created 1st Viscount Mountjoy in 1795.1 On 30 September 1795 so created.
  • He fought in the Battle of Ross, Ireland, falling in action at the head of his regiment.
  • He was known with her sisters Anne, Marchioness Townshend (qv), and Barbara, Honour Mrs John Beresford (see WATERFORD, M), as the ‘Three Irish Graces' and generally considered the three most beautiful women in Europe), eldest dau of Sir William Montgomer in 1830.
