Lydia was born on May 6, 1697 in Nantucket, Massachusetts to Nathaniel Coffin and Damaris Gayer. [1] She was the fourth child and third daughter born to Nathaniel and Damaris.

On July 26, 1714, Lydia married Joseph Chase in Nantucket. [2] The couple had ten children together: Abel, Mary, Damaris, Lydia, Priscilla, Rachel, Sarah, Benjamin, Joseph Jr., and Thomas. [3] According to Banks, Joseph was a hatter. He and Lydia lived out their lives in Edgartown. Joseph owned a lot on the harbor front in Edgartown, one of the "five and twenty" south of Main Street."[3]

Lydia passed away on July 17, 1749 in Edgartown and is buried alongside Joseph in the Tower Hill Cemetery in Edgartown. She was 52. [3][4]
