Lydia was born in present-day Staten Island, the daughter of Samuel Kierstede (misspelled as "Casted" on some documents) and Lydia Dey. Dey was the daughter of Jan Hans Duyts (or Dey) and Marietje Molenaer (or Maertje Joosts Vermuelen Molenaar)
of New Netherlands, now New York City. Lydia's father Samuel (c1697-1733) was the son of Jacobus Kierstede (b 1665) and Anna Holmes (b 1670).
Lydia married William Hayden (1727-1823), a 5th generation descendant of Mayflower passengers John Alden and Priscilla Mullins, in December 1748, probably in her hometown.
The couple moved to Morristown, NJ, had at least 11 children between 1749 and about 1767. William was am innkeeper in Morristown, and according to family records, took over the Arnold Tavern from Capt. Jacob Arnold. The inn and tavern served as headquarters for Gen. George Washington in 1777. William left Morristown in 1778, so it is possible he was innkeeper when Washington was there. According to DAR and military pension records, William served in the Revolutionary War, as did five of the couple's sons. William was Sergeant of the guard at Fredericksburg Magazine, and for his services received 2,268 acres on Timber Ridge, Hampshire County, VA (now WV). This land was disposed of in 9 separate deeds between 1791 and 1795.
William and Lydia spent their later years on Timber Ridge, near Rio, where at least one son, a doctor, also lived. Lydia died Aug. 11, 1795 in Rio, at age 71, and is said to be buried in the "Old Cemetery" in Rio, likely on the family's land. Her husband, William, is buried in Little White Rock Cemetery, Fayette County, PA, where he last lived after Lydia's death.
