About Lydia Morgan
Description
In-depth research has proven that Lydia Steele, who married James Bird in Farmington, Hartford County, Connecticut on 31 March 1657, could not have been the mother of more than one of the children of James Bird. Her death record has been located and it proves that she died on 14 Jan 1659 in Farmington, Hartford County, Connecticut.
In the book:
Various ancestral lines of James Goodwin and Lucy (Morgan) Goodwin of Hartford, Connecticut: compiled by Frank Farnsworth Starr for James J. Goodwin
See page 14 of the above source – (which includes links to the online image of the book)
“….Evidently in violation of this law, September 6, 1655, the names of James Bird, Stephen Hopkins, John Graves and Nath. Gunn were entered on the records of the Particular Court as "thos that neglect attending the Gaurde".
These four young men were residents of Hartford at this time. Presumably Bird did not long remain in Hartford after this date, but removed to Farmington.
On page 331 of the second volume of the Land Records of the latter town is this entry: "James Bird was maryed: to Ledia Steel march the thirty & one one thousand Six hundreth fifty and Seven"
Another entry on page 319 (of Farmington, Connecticut town records) reads: "Ledia Bird the wife of James Bird Eanded hur Naterall Life Jeneuary the forteene one thousaind Six hundreth fifty and Nyne".
Since the birth records of the children have not been located, apparently only the oldest child could have been a child of Lydia Steele. Some records give that child as Thomas Bird and some give it as James Bird. Any children born 1660 or after, would have to belong to the 2nd wife of James Bird, who Starr identifies, through extensive research, as “Rebecca”:
On page 18 of the same source begins the discussion of the identity of Rebecca, the 2nd wife of James Bird.
"It should be remembered that Lydia, wife of James Bird, died in January 1659.
The Farmington Church records show the James Bird and his wife were full members in communion, March 1, 1679/80. This proves that he married again and his wife's name is believed to have been REBECCA.
A Rebecca Bird was a witness to the codicil of widow Elizabeth Smith of Farmington, which was made after November 15, 1676, the date of her will and before December 5, 1678, when probate action was taken on her estate. This Rebecca Bird is believed to have been James Bird's wife. In the list of James Bird's children is a daughter, Rebecca, presumably named for her mother. This child could scarcely have been the witness to Elizabeth Smith's codicil, as she would have been a minor at that time and it would have been unusual for so young a person to have attested to such an important document.
There is no known records of the deaths of James Bird and his second wife. The last trace of her living is in a conveyance from him to his son Thomas, dated June 28, 1690 and of him living is February 11, 1705/6, the date of the deed to his son, James, Junior."
