About Lydia Ann Scott

GEDCOM Note

OUTLINE OF ANCESTRY LYDIA ANN SCOTT 1876-1954

Lydia was born at 100 Waterloo Road, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, her parents having moved there from Liverpool for a brief period. By 1881 Lydia was back in Liverpool living with mother and her Morgan grandparents. Her father has not been traced from this period, and by 1890 was listed as "deceased" on the marriage certificate of his son. Lydia married John James White, an Elementary School teacherin 1899; he had been born in Birkenhead in 1877, the son of Andrew White, a Ship's Fireman (Stoker) and Mary Cavanagh. Andrew was from the village of Kilmacanogue in Co. Wicklow, Ireland, and Mary thought to have been from nearby.

There were eleven surviving children of the marriage of Lydia and John, with four said to have been lost in infancy. Lydia and John spent nearly all their lives living in the vicinity of Walton in Liverpool, and she died at 16 Abingdon Road, Walton, at the home of her daughter, Lydia Gorry. John had died in January 1933.

Lydia Ann Scott, 40 Waterloo Street, Hanley Stoke upon Trent, County of Stafford

Birth certificate:

Entry Number: 459. It is thought that her father William Henry Scott was a cruel man and so she and her mother Sarah went to live with her parents, the Morgans.

She became a teacher and did her teacher training in the Notre Dame College in Everton Valley Liverpool. She apparently met her future husband John James White a teacher in St John's Primary School, Kirkdale, when she was sent to the school with a message from Notre Dame.
She subsequently married and they had 15 children 11 (6 boys and 5 girls) of whom survived infancy. It is interesting to note that her daughter Martha reared exactly the same family of 6 boys and 5girls.

She lived on Thomaston Street at time of marriage to John then Freeport Grove, Haldene Road, and Astor Street.

Lydia Ann Scott married John James White, Headmaster of an Elementary School, in 1899 in Liverpool. John was from a Co. Wicklow farming family. There were eleven children of the marriage» six sons and five daughters.

The second daughter was Mary White, born in Bootle in 1908. Mary became a shop assistant, but later in life, the Supervisor of Female Staff for the Grattan Wail Order Company.
