Born in Duluth on May 15, 1925, he was the only child of Harry A. Segal and Sarah Weinberg Segal.
His first love was music and was an accomplished jazz pianist. After graduating from Central High School, he traveled around the country playing gigs until the Army found him and sent him to Europe to fight in World War II. When it was discovered that he was a musician, he was transferred to the U.S.O. and spent the rest of his service entertaining the troops with the likes of Bob Hope, Mickey Rooney and others.
After the Army, he returned to Duluth and finished his education, graduating from the University of Minnesota. In 1950 he married Barbara Stitt from Fort William, Ontario, Canada. They recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary.
In the early 1950s, he founded Bond Realty Corporation, a real estate, appraisal, and financial services company. In the late 1970s, he took on his son-in-law, John Sillanpa, as a partner.
Throughout his career, he kept his hand in the music business, playing shows around the Duluth area, conducting and arranging music for such events as the Home Show and the Ice Capades.
