Mrs. Martha Voss, widow of the late Cornelius Voss, residing three miles north of St. Anne on the Dixie Highway, met instant death at 10:45 Sunday morning directly in front of her home when she was stuck by an automobile driven by Roy Thompson of St. Anne, an employee of the Eastern Illinois Clay Company.

Mrs. Voss and her son, John, with whom she lived, were returning from church services. The home is located on the west side of the Dixie hightway. They pulled off the east side of the pavement and Mrs. Voss got out of the car, her son intending to drive the machine on into the barnyard. The aged woman walked back to her son's car and started across the hightway.

Thompson was headed south in his Overland machine and did not see the woman until it was too late.He swerved his machine to the east side of the road thinking the woman would go on across. But instead, she jumped backward and the car struck her a heavy blow.Thompson's car ran into the ditch, struck a concrete culvert and came to a standstill.Members of Mrs. Voss' family ran out and assisted in carrying her into the house.Dr. Benjamin of St. Anne was called, but gave it as his opinion that the woman had died almost instantly.

Coroner O. J. Cartier conducted the inquest at the Voss home Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock.John Voss, who was driving the Voss machine at the time.Fred Voss, another son who saw the accident from the window of his home.Ray Thompson, driver of the Overland, and Undertaker L. C. Woodington of St. Anne were among the witnesses who testified. Both of the sons testified that in their opinion Thompson was blameless. They said they did not think Mrs. Voss saw the car coming.John Voss said he though Thompson was traveling at a rate of about 25 miles per hour.

Martha Koster was born August 12, 1854, in North Holland, Netherlands, and was married there to Cornelius Voss.Together with several children, they came to this country and first located about forty years ago in Roseland, IL.Thirty years ago they moved to the vicinity of St. Anne where Mrs. Voss has resided ever since.

Her husband died thirteen years ago.

She was the mother of eight children, six of whom survive as follows:John, Fred, Richard, Gerrit, Nellie Westerhoff, and Cornelia Stroo. She also leaves three brothers and one sister.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Nov 17 2019, 2:28:44 UTC
