General

In the circle of modern researchers compiling and updating the family trees there has been some debate as to whether this Geni profile is a combination of two separate Gustavs. This confusion is mostly caused by the following: in an archived Swedish military register of officers two Gustav Meyers served at similar times, the first of whom was the husband of Johanna Regina Bennet with no additional information documented and the second born in 1676 with additional information added in regards to service history (referred to further below). The military officers register does not include the full title von Meyer for either of the two. Importantly, according to Elgenstierna: Gustav von Meyer was the son of Major General Valentin von Meyer (1601-1674). For reference, Elgenstierna was a historical Swedish family tree researcher and compiler for nobility.
Find below additional relevant information for the research.
A Gustav von Meyer has used a seal with likeness to that of the Bennets’ in documents connected to Vändra manor. Johanna Bennet had been the owner of Vändra manor before her husband Gustav von Meyer (Bennets’ seal is different from the noble coats of arms of the von Meyers living in Livonia at the time). This should evidence linking this Gustav von Meyer to the first Gustav Meyer from the Swedish military officers register.
The second Gustav Meyer from the Swedish officers register of the time who was born in either 1676 or 1677 served in the Swedish army under command of Barthold von Meyercrantz. Barthold von Meyercrantz (Meyer) was a nephew of Valentin von Meyer. Based on this it is possible that the second Gustav Meyer was related to Major General Valentin von Meyer and to Barthold von Meyercrantz. However, according to the military register he was born a few years after the death of Major General Valentin von Meyer (date of death 1674), he could not be the Gustav von Meyer referred to by Elgenstierna.
On the 3rd of May 1725 a Gustav von Meyer who was a Res Major in the Swedish army submitted an application to Empress Catherine I to become a nobleman of Livonia of the Russian Empire with the name Von Meyercrantz. No evidence has been found if this application was accepted, making it more likely it was not accepted. The same Gustav also submitted a sketch of Von Meyercrantz's noble coat of arms with great likeness to that of Major General Valentin von Meyer. This is indicative of a connection to Barthold von Meyercrantz, but is inconclusive in regards to determining which Gustav Meyer from the military register this relates to.
It is important to note that Meyer was a relatively common name in German-speaking countries and territories, including Livonia, but there were only two separate families of von Meyers at the time in Livonia that we know of (information on a third von Meyer family exists starting from a later period of time).
The search for truth will continue and the profile will be updated if any new evidence surfaces.
