MAJOR HERMAN GLAFCKE DIES OF PNUEMONIA

Major Herman W. Glafcke died at his home in this city at 1:30 today after an illness of several weeks, the immediate cause of his death being pneumonia.

His condition had caused his friends considerable anxiety for some time and yesterday it was realized that his recovery was not to be hoped for and he passed away surrounded by the immediate members of his family.

Major Glafcke was one of the best known men in Wyoming, having taken an active part in its affairs since 1870, when almost upon his arrival he was chosen secretary of this territory and acted in that capacity and as sitting territorial governor until 1874.

He was publisher of the Cheyenne Leader from 1870 to 1887, and for many years has been well known throughout the state as deputy revenue collector for the district of Wyoming and Colorado, which position he held up to the time of his death.

He was born in the independent city of Hamburg, now a part of the Prussian Empire, June 20, 1840, and came to the United States in 1857, taking up residence in Connecticut, where he met Miss Victorine S. Pollard who subsequently became his wife, and who survives him.

Four sons, Walter G., Everett W., P. Emerson, and Ludlow B Glafcke, and a daughter, Mrs. Jessamine C. Hinkle, are the surviving children.
Major Glafcke was made a Mason in 1867 and became a Knight Templar in 1869, and is a member of the local lodges of those bodies. He was also a member of the G. A. R. and Loyal Legion.

His death will be deeply deplored by all of his acquaintances, for Major Glafcke was always a courteous acquaintance, a loyal friend, and an intelligent and alert citizen.

Herman Glafcke and Women's Suffrage:

In 1869, Wyoming Territory became the first locale in the United States to grant women suffrage. Indeed, it opted to defer statehood unless it could sustain that right.

In 1871, writing to Mrs. John Hooker, Hartford, CT, Herman Glafcke, then Secretary of Wyoming Territory, shared his opinion and observations on women's suffrage:

Mrs. John Hooker, the addressee, in Glafcke's letter:

Isabella Holmes Beecher Hooker (1822-1907)
In the early 1860s Isabella became involved in the woman's suffrage movement. Along with Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, Isabella organized the National Woman's Suffrage Association in 1869. She was also a founding member of the Connecticut Woman's Suffrage Association. Isabella's ideas of equality were influenced by John Stuart Mills' political work, On Liberty and the Subjection of Women.

In 1871, Isabella organized the annual convention of the National Woman's Suffrage Association in Washington D.C. and was invited to present her argument before the Committee on the Judiciary of the United States Senate.

Glafcke's letter to Mrs. Hooker is "formal" in style. Yet, as a resident of Hartford, CT for over 10 years before his migration to WY, it is likely that he was at least acquainted with Mr. and Mrs. Hooker.

As the bio sketch of Mrs. Hooker suggests, it may be that she wrote Glafcke to request his observation of suffrage in Wyoming in preparation for her testimony before the U. S. Senate.
