Intellegence was received in the city on yesterday of the death in Charlottesville, of Major Lawrence Pitman, father of Dr. W. E. Pitman, a well-known physician of this city.
Major Pitman died at the residence in Charlottesville of his son-in-law, Mr. Flannagan. He was born at Red Bank , in Shenandoah County, eighty-eight years ago, and spent the greater part of his life in the county of his birth. For many year he had been a member of the Episcopal church.
He is survived by six children, Mrs. Annie E. Mallory of Washington, D.C.; Mrs. R. D. Powers, of Staunton; Miss Susan Pitman, of Charlottesville, Mrs. Florence Gardner, of Tokio, Japan [mother of Helga Houghton Gardiner]; Rev. Frank Pitman, of Poolesville, Md.; and Dr. W. E. Pitman, of Lynchburg.
The funeral services will take place in Charlottesville this afternoon at 3 o'clock.

He was married to Jane Almond. He was the son of Lawrence Pittman and Mary Catherine Will who were married on 22 Mar 1794 in York County, Pennsylvania. He was the grandson of John Will and Maria Sussanna Schermann.
