    • "Passes Away in Florida—Body will be Brought Here for Burial.
    • "Major Seth Barton French, of New York, died at Palm Beach, Florida, Thursday after an illness of many weeks of heart trouble, aged 77 years.

He was born at Sunnyside," in Spotsylvania County, in Oct., 1832. His mother was Miss Elisabeth Barton and father Dr. Wm. French.

  • * "When a young man, he came to Fredericksburg and lived with the late Hugh Scott, and later was a member of the firm of Scott & French; afterwards of the firm of Adams & French, until the war of 1861-'65, when he entered the Confederate army and was stationed in Richmond, rising to the rank of Major.
    • "When the war was over, he organized the firm of French & Crenshaw. This was not a success.
    • "He then went to New Orleans and was engaged with Mr. J. Temple Doswell in the cotton business. Later he went to New York with the firm of W.H. Newman & Co. and W.H. Travers and Morton, Bliss & Co., respectively, where he made a fortune. At the time of his death he was a special partner of Van Emburgh and Atterberry, bankers, New York.
    • "His remains will be brought here from Florida Sunday morning and the funeral services will be held in the French Memorial Chapel at an hour to be named later. Mrs. Seth Barton French, Mr. & Mrs. Charles Steele, Dr. & Mrs. John Herndon French, who were with Mr. French at his death, will accompany the remains.
