Maj. Thomas Snowden

From the Maryland Gazett, Annapolis, Maryland, October 29, 1803 reads in part:

It is with deepest regret we announce the death of Thomas Snowden, Senr., Esqr of this county. He expired at his residence near this city suddenly, on Monday morning last. Long will his memory be cherished by a large circle of Relations and Friends.

The Major, a Quaker by birthright, became sole heir to the vast holdings of his father. He kept open house in the manner of his forebears, but lived on a scale more elaborate than that expected of him by his religion. They forbade him to come to meetings after his marriage to a wealthy heiress.

When the threat o war came to the colonies, he kept in touch with the leaders in Maryland and Virginia. He invited the patriots to his home for conferences in his effort to help in the cause of freedom. He was selected chairman of a committee to solicit names to the oath of the Articles of Association proposed by the Continental Congress in 1774. This action brought more criticism from the Society of Friends even though he held his noncombative participation.

In 1776, Thomas Snowden found his patriotism stronger than his principles and accepted a commission as captain to enforce the "association" of the Continental Congress. On May 18, 1776, he was promoted to Second Major of the Twenty-fifth Battalion of the Prince George's County Militia of Maryland.
